Tirosalata is a popular Greek cheese appetizer served before the main course. Tirosalata is served as a small appetizer - meze with ouzo, tsipouro or wine. In Mediterranean restaurants, it is often served along with baba ganoush, hummus and tzatziki as part of an appetizer plate into which pita bread, pita bread or other snacks are dipped. Very often, tirosalata is used as a dip for meat, souvlaki (shish kebab), chicken and grilled vegetables, crackers, fresh grilled bread, bread sticks, croutons or pita bread. In addition, tirosalate is used as one of the layers of a sandwich or sandwich. You can add lemon juice to the tirosalata if you like. Tirosalata literally means "cheese salad" because the most important constant ingredient is whipped feta cheese. Due to the ease of preparation and availability of ingredients, this snack was very popular among ordinary Greek peasants. Also among the meze (dip sauces) of Greek cuisine you can find such variations of tyrosalat as ktipiti/htipiti or tirokafteri. This is also a feta and/or white cheese based appetizer that also includes red cherry peppers, grilled peppers, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and oregano. Sometimes yogurt is added if the snack contains too hot peppers to balance the taste (unlike tirosalate, this is a spicy snack).
